I thought I’d take a moment to detail a few things about the comic these past few days. This isn’t in response to anything really, just kind of a “sit down on grandpa’s lap and he’ll tell you a story” kind of moment.
One of the things about my comic that you could say “bugs” me is the format i chose to do it in. It’s a 4-panel strip, with a more or less fixed viewpoint. It’s always at this 3/4 sideways view, which is easy to draw, but i digress. The problem with this, is that when I do storylines, I generally start out with pretty grandiose ideas for them. I have these plans where over the top stuff happens, but i generally keep myself in this 4-panel 3/4 box. There’s only so much you can do with that format. It seems like sometimes my art actually limits what I can do with my comic. So many of my other storylines could have ended much better had I just broken out of the box.
So, Sunday night I decide i’m going to break out of the box with this. Instead of an anticlimactic conclusion to the story, I can manage to tell it the way it should be told. Contrary to popular belief, these comics aren’t HARD, really. It’s more of a time issue. Tuesday’s comic too about 6 hours, wednesday’s took aout 5, and I managed to trim the time taken to do tomorrow’s comic down to about 3 or 4 hours (it still looks good, i just got a better method worked out). Lord knows I won’t stay in this format, because it’s much harder for me to write jokes and punchlines when I’m left to my own devices with the timing. I’ve managed to figure out 4-panel pretty well. :)
Like I said, I didn’t really have anywhere to go with all that. Just wanted to relate to you how I’m feeling. I plan on keeping this format until the conclusion of the more action-oriented parts of this storyline. I’ve had a really fun time doing them, so that’s a good thing. I hope you’re all enjoying it as much as I am.
